Public Scholarship
For over twenty years my scholarship as an academic has been deeply intertwined with my teaching and public-facing work, to the extent that in many cases they are indistinguishable. Rather than following a somewhat linear model of research – publication – communication, I actively draw on my public-facing work — blogs, articles, podcasts and more — as informing my thinking and research as a form of scholarship-in-practice, while simultaneously using these platforms as ways to translate scholarship into impact.
As a result, while I have a well-established conventional academic profile, I increasingly elevate my less conventional work through Substack, the Modem Futura podcast, public engagements, and the media.

Substack
Substack is the platform where I currently do most of my public thinking while writing about emerging issues at the intersection of advanced technologies, society, and the future.
Podcasts
I have co-hosted a number of podcasts, most recently the Modem Futura podcast with Sean Leahy.
YouTube
Since 2012 I haver produced Risk Bites — A YouTube channel designed to help people make sense of complex risks in a changing world.

Over the past few years I have used trade books as a platform for making my work and thinking as accessible and as useful as possible to a broad audience, writing on topics from navigating advanced technologies, to new ways of thinking about the future, to what it means to be human in an age of AI.
