Course archives: Basic Prompt Engineering with ChatGPT
In Summer 2023 I developed and ran one of the first for-credit undergraduate courses in the US on basic prompt engineering using ChatGPT.
The course (which was online and divided across four modules) was designed to provide anyone who took it a basic skill set in using ChatGPT and other AI chatbots in professional settings — irrespective of their background and areas of study — and ensure this was reflected on their transcript. It also provided a critical understanding of the limitations of the tool, and how to use it responsibly.
I only offered the course twice – once in the Summer of 2023 and once in the fall – as large language models were developing and evolving so fast – as were the ways they were being used – that I felt that he material was already out of date by the end of 2023, and to try and continuously update it would be a fool’s errand.
However, there remains useful material here I suspect – especially for anyone starting out from fresh with AI platforms like ChatGPT. And so I’m including my course materials here for anyone who’s interested.
These are my personal notes that were used to build the course within the content management system we use at ASU, and so you’ll get my notes to myself as well as the more substantive stuff 😊
The core material from the course is also available online here: An Introduction to Basic Prompt Engineering using ChatGPT
