Late Lessons, Jensen Huang and AI

Revision log: 06-huang-and-late-lessons-through-maynard.md, 27 September 2026#

What was changed in the public report reading Huang, the industry, Late Lessons, the article and the AI moment through Maynard’s work, and why. The pre-revision file is saved as perspective/review/06-report-before-revision-2026-09-27.md. This was a rebuild, not an edit: the report was rewritten from a new structure, reusing checked evidence from the earlier version and from M1–M9 where it still served.

Inputs read. perspective/portrait.md; the revised 05-maynard-risk-and-ai-map.md (in full to §10, and Appendix C); perspective/review/box.md, fixation.md, value.md and 05-revision-log.md; the previous 06 in full; the summaries and relevant sections of M1–M9 and INTERNAL-notes-for-essay.md; 02 (In brief, §2.3, §2.4, §4.1–§5.6); 03 (§2, §3.5, §4.9, §8.4, §9.1, §10.6 as needed); 01 §5.8 and §6 (rules, K, W, T, M, L entries, response repertoire); 04 draft 6; the NYT transcript (every Huang quotation used was re-checked); the series introduction (Maynard stuff/substack article 1 draft 6.md, dated 27 September 2026). Primary Maynard sources re-read for this rebuild: 2023-11-26 (in full, with addendum), 2019-03-05, 2016-01-11, 2018-12-15, 2024-08-04, 2024-08-18, 2026-02-22, 2026-09-15, 2026-01-22, 2024-10-13; Toxicol. Sci. 2011; the NN 2016-03 notes in S2; FFTF pp.155–156, 177, 222, 284–285.

Length: about 29,000 words before, about 25,100 after.

§2 In brief (positions; ledger of 9 alignments, 10 divergences with “(strongest)” tags) §2 In brief, led by the lens and the central contrast (two ways of acting on what is not yet understood); no “(strongest)” tags
§3 The lens: ten subsections of positions (value layer, humility against the hubris of numbers, three transfer modes, governance…) §3 The lens organised by his way of thinking: 3.1 changed mindset on kept foundations; 3.2 threat to value (what it opens); 3.3 risk landscape; 3.4 navigating rather than managing; 3.5 orphan risks, framing, the mundane; 3.6 learning across technologies (toxicology and nanotechnology); 3.7 play, creativity, curiosity, serendipity; 3.8 humility against false precision; 3.9 AI acts on the navigator; 3.10 the public scholar; 3.11 what the combination brings, with its weaknesses
§4 Alignments (4.0–4.11) and §5 Divergences (5.1–5.10) §4 Huang through this way of thinking, in the order he reads a leader: 4.0 position with conditions; 4.1 curiosity first (incl. “two delights”); 4.2 frame words table; 4.3 value map; 4.4 four mindsets; 4.5 control or navigation; 4.6 imagination; 4.7 two humilities; 4.8 social curiosity and who carries the worry; 4.9 being human; 4.10–4.11 compact alignments and divergences
§6 Value in Huang’s and industry’s approach; proxy table; interests; §6.5 how he answered similar positions §5 The industry: 5.1 proxy (condensed table); 5.2 mindset gap inside the industry (new); 5.3 frameworks read as orphaning, three orphaned regions; 5.4 what his way of thinking would value (Huang and industry), with “the flip” in his sense; 5.5 interests. Old §6.5 folded into §3.10 and §4.1
§7 Fourteen governance approaches, judged by 02/03 tests; “What his work does not supply” §9 Approaches in three layers: 9.1 eleven moves in thinking; 9.2 eleven instruments as what the moves lead to, with his own tests added to 02/03’s; 9.3 for people outside institutions (new); 9.4 what it does not supply, by design, and what it supplies instead (table)

§9 The AI moment (9.1–9.7, incl. reception grading of commentators and other themes) §8 The AI moment, as of 27 September 2026: a dated annex; events table condensed to nine rows
§10 Article §7 Article (restructured; adds the frame question)
§11 Tensions and limits §10 Tensions and limits (revised) and §11 Open questions (new: ten questions for readers)

2. The lens: from positions to his way of thinking (box.md issues 1–18; value.md issues 1–13)#

3. Structural learning: toxicology and nanotechnology (fixation.md issue 1; box.md issue 12; value.md issue 9)#

4. Fixation and evergreen (fixation.md issues 2–14)#

5. Fairness to Huang and the labs (kept and extended)#

Kept: Huang’s full position with its conditions (§4.0); containment as July’s proximate failure; Huang’s conditional shutdown and auditors; the context of “that’s my problem” (a jobs answer about his own company’s work); “accelerate to be safe” read in full; RSI as two processes; the radiology example as hype; his field’s evidence that engineering safety cultures can work; interests on every side; conditional commitments as evidence for Huang’s moral-hazard point.

Added: a curiosity-first reading that names what is generative in Huang (ambition as the missing input; “speak human”; seventeen days; “discover new ones”; conditions stated in advance; candour; exuberance) and a kinship between Huang’s ambition argument and Maynard’s question about what a frame fails to count (§4.1, §4.6). The “two delights” contrast is framed as two ways of acting, neither anti-empirical nor paralysed. The Man in the White Suit reading is explicitly not a characterisation of Huang, and credits Huang’s own concession on communities.
