Standalone clean-up log (26 September 2026)#

Light editorial pass so that 01, 02 and 03 can stand alone as general resources. Substance, evidence, structure and length are unchanged apart from the items below. Every edit was a targeted replacement except the Appendix C move in 02, which was done with a script that copied the text exactly.

01-late-lessons-analysis.md#

  1. Title. “a working analysis of the two EEA reports” changed to “an analysis of the two EEA reports”.
  2. Subtitle. “Strand A integrated deliverable. Written 26 September 2026 for Andrew Maynard, and revised the same day after fidelity, balance and completeness reviews (working/late-lessons/review/; changes listed in revision-log.md)” replaced with a neutral description: an audited analysis of the two reports with post-publication checks to September 2026 and a technology-neutral lens; written 26 September 2026 and revised the same day after fidelity, balance and completeness reviews; one of three companion documents (cross-references to 02-huang-analysis.md and 03-late-lessons-and-huang.md). The pointer to the review files moved to Appendix B (item 10).
  3. §1.1. “This is a working summary and analysis” changed to “This is a summary and analysis”.
  4. §1.1. “It is built to be used later as an analytical lens” changed to “It is also built to serve as an analytical lens”.
  5. §1.1. Added a parenthesis after “does not apply the lens to any contemporary technology”: the companion document 03-late-lessons-and-huang.md applies it to one position on AI safety.
  6. §1.2. “organised as 47 project sections” changed to “organised into 47 sections for analysis”.
  7. §1.3 Method. Added one sentence after the numbered steps: “The analysis was prepared with extensive AI assistance, as a multi-stage process of reading, audit and review, commissioned by Andrew Maynard (section 1.5).” This matches the provenance statement already in 03 §1.2. For the owner to confirm, since it adds a provenance statement the original did not make.
  8. §1.4. “Section ids follow the project scheme” changed to “follow the scheme used throughout this document and its companions”.
  9. §1.5 Disclosure. “Andrew Maynard co-authored LL2 Chapter 22” changed to “Andrew Maynard, who commissioned this analysis, co-authored LL2 Chapter 22”. “Readers should know where LL2-22 and its hindsight file carry weight in this document:” changed to “LL2-22 and its hindsight file carry weight in this document at these points:”. The rest of the disclosure (including the balance-review correction and the recommendation that someone with no connection to the chapter re-check the LL2-22 entries) is unchanged.
  10. §1.6. “the working files in working/late-lessons/” changed to “a set of supporting working files (working/late-lessons/)”, and “the reviews of this document” added to the list of file types.
  11. Appendix B. Retitled from “Index of working files” to “Supporting material”. “All paths are relative to the project folder.” replaced with “The source reports and the working files behind this document are listed below. Paths are relative to the folder that contains this document.” Added one table row for working/late-lessons/review/ (fidelity, balance, completeness and revision log), which was previously cited only in the subtitle.

Not changed: “limits of the project” (§4.9 and the T09 row) and “the project originator” (Appendix A, LL2-27), which refer to the EEA’s Late Lessons project, not this one. Citations to working files (notes, digests, hindsight, themes T01–T10, critiques, context) are kept as the document’s citation system.

02-huang-analysis.md#

  1. Subtitle. Removed “Strand B integrated analysis” and “for Andrew Maynard”. Now reads: “Prepared 25 September 2026. Subject: … published 23 September 2026. One of three companion documents”, with cross-references to 01-late-lessons-analysis.md and 03-late-lessons-and-huang.md. Title unchanged.
  2. Contents. “Appendix B. Index of working files” changed to “Appendix B. Supporting material”; “Appendix C. Sources you may be able to retrieve” removed; “Appendix D. Sources” changed to “Appendix C. Sources”.
  3. §1.1. “to be compared later with other material” changed to “to allow comparison with other material (the companion document 03-late-lessons-and-huang.md is one such comparison)”.
  4. §1.2. “held in the project’s Resources/ folder” changed to “held with this document’s supporting material in Resources/”.
  5. §1.3 item 5. “Where working files disagree, I say which source I rely on and why” changed to “… this document says which source it relies on and why”.
  6. §1.3 item 6. “logged in working/huang/review/revision-log.md” changed to “logged in the review files listed in Appendix B”.

For the owner to confirm, as for 01 item 7.

  9. §1.4. “The New York Times publishes an official transcript that would settle the attributions (Appendix C)” changed to “…would settle the attributions; its episode page was blocked during this research (Appendix C)”. The reference now points to the renamed Sources appendix, which lists the episode page as blocked.
  10. §1.5. “Appendix D lists the main sources” changed to “Appendix C lists the main sources”.
  11. §1.5. “Where only Wikipedia or press accounts were available, I say so” changed to “…, this is noted”.
  12. §2.1. “or my reading of it” changed to “or this document’s reading of it”.
  13. §4 introduction. “The premises and causal models are my reconstruction” changed to “… are a reconstruction”.

  18. Appendix B. Paths are relative to working/huang/ in the folder that contains this document.” In the review/completeness.md row, “and Appendix D” changed to “and Appendix C (Sources)”.
  19. Appendix C “Sources you may be able to retrieve” removed. Its text (intro line and all 21 items) was copied verbatim to working/sources-to-retrieve.md under a one-line heading noting where it came from. The separator before the next appendix was kept.
  20. Appendix D renamed Appendix C (Sources). Heading changed; content unchanged.

The first-person author voice (“I”, “my”) was neutralised in items 5, 8, 11–14 and 17 because it would otherwise read as the voice of the commissioner or publisher. First-person words inside quotations, and generic “we/you” in paraphrase of Huang, were not touched. Not changed: §10.3’s “may be the most useful one for comparing Huang’s view with other material” and §10.4 “Open questions for further analysis”, which read as general statements.

03-late-lessons-and-huang.md#

Already written for a general readership, with a neutral method statement (§1.2), disclosure (§1.5) and supporting-material appendix (Appendix B). Only the changes needed to match the new 01 title were made:

  1. Subtitle. 01’s title updated to “Late lessons from early warnings: an analysis of the two EEA reports”, and file names added for both companions (01-late-lessons-analysis.md, 02-huang-analysis.md).
  2. §1.2. 01’s title updated in the same way.
  3. Appendix B. 01’s title updated in the same way.

Checked and found clean: no references to strands, phases, a planned article or post, notes to the owner, or second-person address. References to Andrew Maynard are the LL2-22 disclosure (§1.2, §1.5, §11.3 and the Appendix C key), which are kept. Cross-references to HA Appendix A remain valid, because 02’s Appendix A is unchanged.
