Review: public framing of 06 and 05#
Working file, 26 September 2026. Scope: whether 06-huang-and-late-lessons-through-maynard.md (890 lines) and 05-maynard-risk-and-ai-map.md (1,192 lines) read as standalone public documents for a web knowledge base. The review checks for project-internal commentary, direct address to Maynard, project mechanics, and whether the provenance notes are accurate and neutral. Method: I read 06 in full. For 05 I read §1–3, §7–9 and Appendices A–C in full and searched the rest by pattern (second person, first person outside quotations, “request”, “asked”, “batch”, “working/”, “INTERNAL”, “clarification”, the excluded book, Garbee). I checked the quotations of the series introduction against Maynard stuff/substack article 1 draft 3.md, and checked the supporting files that both appendices point readers to.
Overall. Neither document addresses Maynard directly. Neither contains questions for him or notes for the future essay, and there is no “Andrew asked” or “as requested” language in running text. AI and the Art of Being Human does not appear in either document. The Garbee ruling is reflected in both. The Anthropic disclosure in 06 §1.4 is good practice. The problems are at the edges: the appendices, the companion-file references, a pre-publication source, identifiers a public reader cannot resolve, and a handful of phrases that expose the process. Issues are ranked by the harm they would cause if the documents went live as they are.
Ranked issues#
1. The appendices send public readers to working files that are unpublished or not fit to publish (HIGH)#
- Location. 06 Appendix B (lines 881–889) and §1.3 (line 55, “Appendix B”). 05 Appendix B (lines 1085–1097), §1 Sources (lines 17, 21), the crosswalk note (line 226), Appendix A preamble (line 978) and Appendix C preamble (line 1103).
- Evidence. Both appendices list
working/…andResources/…paths “relative to the folder containing this report”. The series introduction says “The work that went into this is also available on the associated websire [sic]”, so these files may well be published. If they are: - all nine dimension files
working/maynard-lens/M1–M9contain a section headed “INTERNAL (not for publication)” (for example M5 from line 271: “Questions for Maynard … Would you support…”), andINTERNAL-notes-for-essay.mdsits in the same folder; working/maynard/publications.md:233says “Not located online; ask Andrew for the file.”;- AI and the Art of Being Human appears in
timeline.md(lines 14, 238),concept-index.md:17,themes/T4…:24andsupplement/S7(nine mentions), among others. That breaches ruling (2), “not in source lists”; timeline.md:14lists Garbee among “co-written work”, which contradicts ruling (1);working/text/NYT-official-transcript.txtis a copy of a New York Times transcript, andResources/maynard-papers/holds journal PDFs, including a folder namedMaynard supplied/. Pointing readers to these implies that copyrighted material is being redistributed.
If the files are not published, every path in the appendices is a dead reference. - Fix. In both documents, replace the path lists with a neutral note: “The working notes, dimension analyses and source copies behind this report are not published. Posts are cited from the public text mirror (https://text.futureofbeinghuman.com/substack/SLUG.html); other works are cited by the full references in 05, Appendix C.” If any of the working layer is to go online, publish a curated subset only after removing every INTERNAL section, the “ask Andrew” line, all references to the excluded book, and the Garbee co-written tag, and without any NYT or journal copies. In 06 §1.3, also remove “(Appendix B)” as the place to find the dimension analyses, or say they are not published.
2. A draft is quoted as if it were the published series introduction (HIGH)#
- Location. 06 lines 47, 88, 143, 434, 702, 709, 781 and 827 (every “Series introduction 2026” citation).
- Evidence. 06 cites “The Future of Being Human, 27 September 2026”. The only text of it is
Maynard stuff/substack article 1 draft 3.md, which hasdate: 2026-09-27, placeholders (“[add url]”), and typos (“teh”, “briinging”, “assesed”, “websire”). 05 is dated 26 September. All the quoted strings match draft 3, but several [Stated] labels in 06 depend on wording that may still change. - Fix. Before 06 goes live, re-check every quoted phrase against the published post: “naive and misguided”, “shallowly interpreting…”, “rigor and balance”, “impressive”, “not sure I fully agree with”, “(and this includes Claude’s resulting article)”, “broader landscape…”, “largely as it is depicted by Huang”, “struggled to apply conceptual rather than literal comparisons…”, “was intentional” and “a particular frame to bear”. Add the post’s URL to §1.2. Publish 06 no earlier than the introduction. (This is already priority-1 item 1 in
INTERNAL-notes-for-essay.md; it is repeated here because it gates publication.)
3. Companion document 04 is identified by a draft filename that still contains notes addressed to Maynard (HIGH for the set; MEDIUM for 06)#
- Location. 06 line 3 (subtitle), line 50, line 781 and Appendix B line 885 (
04-article-draft-6.md). - Evidence.
04-article-draft-6.mdopens withdraft: 6,byline (suggested), and “[AM: short introduction, ~100–150 words, in your own words … using a writing skill trained on your work, with your edits …]”. The project root also holds drafts 1–5 and two “AM” edit files, all named 04. 06 describes 04 as having “his final edits”, which assumes a final version that is not this file. - Fix. Publish only the article as posted, under a stable name (for example
04-article.md), with the placeholders removed. Update the references in 06 (lines 3, 50, 781, 885). Keep the other 04 drafts out of the knowledge base. Confirm that the published 04 carries his final edits, so that 06’s “with his final edits” is true.
4. The provenance note in 06 is neutral but incomplete, and it is not aligned with how the series describes the work (MEDIUM)#
- Location. 06 §1.1 (line 33), §1.2 (lines 47, 50), §1.4 (lines 59–68).
- Evidence and fixes.
- (a) “Reviewed by him” (line 59) must be true on the day of publication. The series introduction describes the lens article as “carefully checked and edited by me”. If Maynard edits 06, “reviewed and edited by him” is more accurate. If his review is partial, use “for his review”. Align this with 05 line 3 and with the introduction.
- (b) The map is also AI-drafted. 06 builds its lens on “The map of his thinking (05)”, but §1.4 never says that 05 is itself an AI synthesis. A public reader could take the [Stated] positions as Maynard’s own summary. Add: “The map of his thinking (05), on which this report’s reading of his positions rests, was prepared by the same AI-assisted process and reviewed by him; [Stated] labels refer to his published texts, but the selection and arrangement are the map’s.”
- (c) 01–04 are also AI-produced. §1.1 (line 33) introduces them passively (“a set of analyses read Huang’s position…”). Add “prepared with AI assistance at Maynard’s request” there, rather than leaving it to §1.4.
- (d) “Assistance” versus authorship. “Prepared … with extensive AI assistance” (line 59) is followed at once by “The drafting model, Claude (Opus 5.5)”. The introduction says the lens article was “authored by Claude”, and 04’s byline reads “By Claude (Opus 5.5)”. Use one formulation across the series. Suggested: “Drafted by Claude (Opus 5.5), made by Anthropic, at Maynard’s request, and reviewed by him.”
- (e) Name the model in the mixed-provenance item. Line 63 says the frontier paper was “drafted by a model”. 05 line 72 names it as Claude (Fable 5), which is also an Anthropic model. Naming it makes the Anthropic disclosure complete.
5. 05’s provenance note omits the model, the vendor disclosure and a relevant co-authorship (MEDIUM)#
- Location. 05 line 1 (title), line 3 (subtitle), line 48 (Method) and §1 Limits (lines 96–102).
- Evidence.
- “Prepared 26 September 2026 with extensive AI assistance, at Maynard’s request, and reviewed by him” does not name the model or its maker. Yet 05 judges which of his 2026 ideas “may have originated with Fable” and assesses texts drafted by Claude, so an Anthropic model is judging how much of his thinking came from Anthropic models.
- The title, “Andrew Maynard on risk, AI and AI risk”, with no byline, can be read as authored by him.
- 05 never mentions that he co-authored chapter 22 of the 2013 EEA report, which the companion documents 01–03 analyse. 06 §1.4 does disclose it.
- Fix. Add to the subtitle or Method: “Drafted by Claude (Opus 5.5), made by Anthropic, whose models also drafted or co-developed several of the 2026 texts assessed here.” Consider a byline line under the title. Add one line to Limits: “He also co-authored the nanotechnology chapter (ch. 22) of the EEA’s 2013 Late lessons report; it is analysed in 01, not here.”
6. The “clarification” wording signals an off-page correction and is repeated mechanically (MEDIUM)#
- Location. 06 lines 78, 166 (“His first clarification.”) and 179 (“His second clarification.”). 05 lines 35–42 (heading “Maynard’s clarifications, September 2026”), line 39 (“He has also cautioned against presenting his positions as more absolute than they are”), and the repeated “Maynard has emphasised (September 2026)” at lines 108, 252, 702, 755 and 847, with “has explained (September 2026)” at lines 294, 635 and 905.
- Evidence.
- “Clarification” and “cautioned against presenting his positions…” tell a public reader that Maynard corrected an earlier version of the analysis. That is project mechanics.
- The sentence in line 39 is also a feedback instruction to the drafters turned into a statement of his view.
- The same attributed sentence appears eight times in 05, which reads like a patch rather than analysis.
- These remarks are unpublished, but they carry the same [Stated] label as published texts. 06 §1.2 meanwhile says that his “one statement on this material” is the series introduction.
- Fix.
- Retitle the passages “Two points Maynard has emphasised (September 2026)”. In 06, replace the “first/second clarification” run-ins with “Building on, not replacing” and “Restraint with numbers as a choice”.
- Cite them once as “(Maynard, personal communication, September 2026)” and add to 06 §1.5 that [Stated] includes these two unpublished remarks.
- Delete 05 line 39’s last sentence. 06 §3.1 already makes the point analytically: “His own summaries sometimes sound more absolute”.
- In 05, keep the full statement in §1 and C3/C5, and replace the later repetitions with “(see §1)”.
7. Residual process language in 05 (MEDIUM)#
- Location and fixes.
- Line 57: “Modem Futura podcast posts, at Maynard’s request”. This is an instance of the “as requested” pattern. Give a neutral scoping reason instead, for example “Posts about the co-hosted Modem Futura podcast are excluded” (confirm the reason; see INTERNAL).
- Line 17: “Batch readers rated 279 posts…” is project jargon. Suggested: “In the reading, 279 posts were rated…”.
- Line 21: “gathered from free and legitimate sources” is defensive, and it conflicts with the
Maynard supplied/folder (line 1096; Appendix C line 1110). Suggested: “gathered from publicly available sources and from copies supplied by Maynard”. - Line 1094: “(compiled before the supplementary reading)”. Lines 230, 243, 706, 712: “concept index Family 10/11”. Crosswalk column “Theme file” (lines 228–244). These are all internal-file pointers. Drop them or fold them into the note in issue 1.
8. The “In brief” paragraph on the article is unlabelled and reads as an endorsement (MEDIUM)#
- Location. 06 line 147 (“The article [section 10]. His work would endorse most of it…”). The §10.1 heading at line 783, “What his work would endorse”, has the same problem.
- Evidence. Every other “In brief” paragraph carries a label. This one does not, and many readers will read only the “In brief”. Maynard has said publicly that he is “not sure I fully agree with” the assessment “(and this includes Claude’s resulting article)”. An unlabelled “would endorse” sits awkwardly beside that.
- Fix. Revise to: “The article [section 10; Inferred]. Read against his published positions, most of the article’s claims are consistent with his work, above all… Maynard has said he is not sure he fully agrees with the assessment, including the article (Series introduction 2026).” Consider retitling §10.1 “Where it is consistent with his work”.
9. Quotations from the series introduction are attributed a little beyond what the text says (MEDIUM)#
- Location. 06 line 143 and §8.5 line 709.
- Evidence.
- Line 143 says: “Maynard has said that the analysis and the article treat AI ‘largely as it is depicted by Huang’ and ‘struggled to apply conceptual rather than literal comparisons’”. In draft 3, “treat AI largely as it is depicted by Huang” is said of “the analysis”.
- The subject of “struggled” is “Opus”, the model doing the analysis.
- The article is brought in only by “(and this includes Claude’s resulting article)”, which is attached to “not sure I fully agree with”.
- Fix. Revise to: “Maynard has said that the analysis treats AI ‘largely as it is depicted by Huang’, that the model ‘struggled to apply conceptual rather than literal comparisons’, and that his reservations extend to ‘Claude’s resulting article’ (Series introduction 2026)”. Mirror the change in §8.5.
10. Identifiers a standalone reader cannot resolve, or can misread (MEDIUM)#
- Undefined key. “Weighing 2009” (06 lines 253, 629, 686, 748, 875) is not in 05 Appendix C, which 06 §1.5 names as the key list. It is defined only in
working/maynard-lens/M2, as “Nanotechnology: weighing the risks of regulation” (2020 Science, 8 July 2009, co-written with David Rejeski). Add it to 05 Appendix C, or define it in 06 §1.5. - Citation to a working file. “(E4)” at line 534 cites
working/huang/external/E4. Replace it with “(02 §9.1; 03 §4.2)”, where the “outlandish”/”great courage” episode appears. - 02’s code families are unexplained. “(02, P4)” (line 344), “(02 T2)” (356), “(T9)” (429, with no document number) and “(02 A7)” (452). §1.5 explains only 01’s lens ids and 02’s C numbers. Add: “02’s premises (P), tensions (T), assumptions (A) and fact-checked claims (C)”, and prefix line 429 with “02”.
- Collisions.
- T is used for 01 lens entries (T1 at 613, T4 at 639 and 702), 02 tensions (T2, T9) and 05 threads (T1–T11).
- M1 is both 01’s lens entry (line 685) and the dimension file M1 (line 886).
- “S3 2026”, a citation key (line 528), clashes with supplement groups S1–S7 (line 887; 05 line 231).
- C covers 01’s lens C7 (line 693), 02’s C083–C131 and 05’s C1–C18.
Always prefix foreign codes with the document number (“01 T4”, “01 M1”, “02 T9”). Consider renaming the key “S3 2026” to “SCURVES 2026”. - Undefined terms. - “The Mirror” (line 849): add “01’s rule that every lens question is also asked of critics”. - “Maynard’s Garbee lesson” (562) and “His Garbee lesson” (694): use “the lesson of his 2019 work on responsible innovation in entrepreneurial cultures (2019-08-13)”; see also issue 12. - “the Raine case” (568): add a gloss. - “Centaur” (352): add “a model of human cognition” or similar. - “the lens” is used both for 01’s 72-entry diagnostic lens and for Maynard’s lens (for example line 728, “the lens’s application” against “his lens would raise…”). Call 01’s “the Late Lessons diagnostic lens” throughout.
11. 05’s authorship sentence could imply undisclosed ghost-authorship (LOW–MEDIUM; fairness to Maynard)#
- Location. 05 line 809: “…the view that listing himself as author of an AI-written paper would ‘amount to academic dishonesty’ (September 2026), after appearing as the listed author of a Claude-written paper in March 2026.”
- Evidence. Constituting Responsibility states on its title page that it “was written by Claude (Opus 4.6, Anthropic) under the guidance of the listed author, who takes responsibility for the work” (
supplement/S5, line 336). The juxtaposition in 05 omits that disclosure. - Fix. Insert “(with Claude’s authorship stated on the title page)” after “March 2026”. Treat line 618 and tension 13 (line 879) the same way if needed.
12. The public wording of the Garbee ruling may read as a judgement on the co-author (LOW–MEDIUM)#
- Location. 06 line 68; 05 line 66; 05 Appendix A line 1061; 06 lines 562 and 694 (“Garbee lesson”).
- Evidence. “Maynard has confirmed (September 2026) that it is fully his own thinking” is accurate and follows ruling (1). But published without context, it can be read as saying that the co-author contributed no ideas. Labelling the lesson with her name while calling it wholly his is also odd.
- Fix. Keep the ruling and soften only the framing. For example: “Maynard has confirmed (September 2026) that the chapter sets out his own thinking, and it is weighted here as his; this is a statement about its evidential weight for his views, not about the co-author’s contribution.” Replace “Garbee lesson” as in issue 10.
13. Residue of the excluded book in 05’s lens D3 (LOW–MEDIUM; ruling 2)#
- Location. 05 line 948 (D3): “which small, locally reasonable compromises could add up to drift?”
- Evidence. The 2026-07-16 paper links its drift argument explicitly to “what Jeffrey Abbott and I refer to as values drift in our book AI and the Art of Being Human: … ‘the small yes that makes the next yes easier’” (corpus text; the paper’s reference 29 is the book). D3’s wording tracks that idea, and nothing in its source bracket credits another source.
- Fix. Ground the clause in the paper’s own documentation of framework changes that were “locally reasonable, publicly logged and individually defensible”, and in Vaughan’s normalisation of deviance, which the paper also cites. For example: “…and which individually defensible changes could, together, weaken a commitment? [the 2026 framework-change evidence is [mixed]]”. Alternatively, drop “drift”.
14. Timestamp and source conventions in 06 §1.5 and §1.2 (LOW)#
- Location. Line 83 (“Huang from the official NYT transcript, with [mm:ss] the approximate start of his turn”) and line 48.
- Evidence. The NYT transcript has no timestamps. The [mm:ss] values come from the episode audio via a separate transcript, and §1.2 gives no URLs.
- Fix. Revise to: “Quotations follow the NYT’s edited transcript (URL); [mm:ss] marks the approximate position in the episode audio.” Add URLs for the NYT page and for both EEA reports; 04 and the series introduction already carry them.
15. “Post-recording” is dated from publication (LOW)#
- Location. 06 line 84 (“Evidence public on or after 23 September is marked ‘post-recording’”), with uses at lines 628 and 750.
- Fix. 23 September is the release date, not the recording date. Rename the label “post-release”.
16. A small inconsistency about whether Maynard has published a view of Huang (LOW)#
- Location. 06 line 43 (“his view of Huang, which he has not published”) against lines 88 and 827.
- Fix. Revise to: “which he has not set out beyond a brief remark in the series introduction (section 1.6)”.
17. “A writing skill trained on Maynard’s prose” (LOW)#
- Location. 06 lines 50 and 781.
- Evidence. “Skill” is product jargon, and “trained” suggests fine-tuning. The skill is an instruction set built from analysis of his prose. Maynard’s own introduction does use “train”, so this is a consistency choice as much as an accuracy one.
- Fix. Revise to: “using a style guide for his writing (a Claude ‘skill’) developed from his published prose, with his final edits”. Or keep “trained”, but match the introduction’s phrasing exactly.
18. Minor accuracy and tone points in 06 §1.1 (LOW)#
- Line 31: “made AI safety a public question” overstates the case. Suggested: “sharpened public attention to AI safety”.
- Line 35: “has worked on … since the mid-2000s”. His exposure-science work on airborne nanoparticles dates from the 1990s (05 §7, Phase 0). Suggested: “a physicist and risk scientist who has worked on nanoparticle exposure since the 1990s and on the health, safety and governance of emerging technologies since the mid-2000s”.
19. The map’s own voice slips into “we” and “our” (LOW)#
- Location. 05 lines 121 (“how little we understand”), 129 (“learn our biases … use them against us”), 139 (“our capacity to form beliefs”), 376 (“We each build reality…”), 672 (“we build reality from…”) and 857 (“what we fail to imagine”).
- Fix. Use third person, or attribute the wording to him. Line 40 paraphrases his own words, so it is acceptable if it is placed in quotation marks.
20. Loose wording in 06 §1.4 about mixed provenance (LOW)#
- Location. Lines 61 and 67.
- Evidence. “Only Maynard’s own prose counts” sits beside the lecture, which was “drafted into prose by a model”. “A [mixed] text … never carries a position alone; where it is the only source, it is marked ‘single source’” contradicts itself; see §6.2, line 567, which is “[Stated, mixed; single source]”.
- Fix. Revise to: “Only text he wrote, or substantially rewrote and endorsed, counts … A [mixed] text should not carry a position alone; where it is the only source, it is marked ‘single source’.”
21. An unspecified conflict of interest in 06 §10.4 (LOW)#
- Location. Line 821: “a defensible choice given the conflict of interest”.
- Fix. Revise to: “given Maynard’s co-authorship of that chapter, which the article discloses (04, note 4)”.
INTERNAL (not for publication)#
Gates before 06 and 05 go live (overlapping with priority 1 in INTERNAL-notes-for-essay.md)
1. Decide whether any of the working/ layer will be published. If it will, it needs a cleaning pass: INTERNAL sections in M1–M9; INTERNAL-notes-for-essay.md; publications.md:233 (“ask Andrew for the file”); references to the excluded book in timeline.md, concept-index.md, the themes and supplement/S6–S7; the Garbee “co-written” tag in timeline.md:14; and no NYT or journal copies.
2. Re-check the series-introduction quotations against the published text on 27 September.
3. Confirm with Maynard whether he will edit 06 or only review it. Then set “reviewed by him” or “reviewed and edited by him” consistently in 05, 06 and the M-file headers.
4. Confirm which 04 text is final, and rename it.
Questions for Maynard - Why were the Modem Futura posts excluded (co-hosted? spoken? promotional?), so that 05 line 57 can give a neutral reason? - Is he content for the two September 2026 points to be cited as “personal communication”, or would he rather publish them (for example in the Tuesday piece) so that they can be cited as published statements? - The series introduction describes a “second article … through the lens of my own work — also authored by Claude” for Tuesday. Is that article 06, or a shorter piece derived from it? If it is derived, the introduction should point readers to 06 on the website, and 06 §1.2 might mention the article. - Is he comfortable with the published wording of the Garbee ruling (issue 12) and of the authorship sentence (issue 11)? - Does he want the “trained” wording (issue 17) kept to match his introduction, or made technically precise?
